Exosome is a kind of single-membrane microvesicles with phospholipid bilayer structure secreted by cells, with a diameter of about 30-200 nm and a density of 1.1-1.2g/ml, naturally present in each cell. In a complex biological fluid, including blood, urine, saliva, breast milk and cerebrospinal fluid, almost all types of cells (tumor cells, immune cells, stem cells) including nerve cells can produce and release exosomes.

Exosomes contain a variety of biologically active substances related to cell sources, including proteins, lipids, and a variety of RNA molecules, which can directly reflect the physiological and pathological state of secreting cells, and can directly activate receptor cells through cell membrane receptors. Release biologically active substances to recipient cells and participate in cell-to-cell communication.

Exosomes play an important role in the activities of the nervous system, participating in processes such as synaptic plasticity, neuronal stress response, intercellular communication and neurogenesis, and mediating the interaction between the central nervous system (CNS) and the systemic system.
